I had a similar problem. Changing the preview thumbnail to never solved the problem. On an educated guess I removed three .TIF files to a separate directory and turned thumbnails back on. Nautilus hangs quite religiously if I try to access the directory with the .TIF files in it. I've moved or cleaned all directories, containing lots of files (building packages - more than 300 Mb of small source files) and the bug disappeared.
