** Summary changed:
- [regression] Hangs during boot if wifi is turned off
+ [regression] Hangs during boot if wifi (Broadcom BCM4313) is turned off
** Description changed:
+ (It now appears this is *not* a kernel issue, as selecting 3.5.0-21
+ (which it would have had when last known to work) from the startup menu
+ doesn't help; I haven't moved it as I don't know where it should be
+ filed.)
+
If the hardware WiFi switch is turned off at boot, Ubuntu always hangs,
and has to be turned off with the power button.
This happens at the splash screen with Nouveau graphics driver, at the
(normally briefly displayed) text mode login prompt with Nvidia driver,
and at Checking battery state... (see photo attached) with Nouveau and
splash screen off. kern.log and syslog terminate mid-line, with nothing
recognisable as an error message.
It is _not_ triggered by lack of a usable network if the hardware switch
- is on, or if the switch is turned off with the system already up.
+ is on, or if the switch is turned off with the system already up. It
+ _is_ triggered by the switch being off even if a wired network is
+ present.
+
+ WORKAROUND: Turning on the proprietary wifi driver (System Settings
+ Software Sources Additional Drivers Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA)
+ avoids this bug.
This is the same machine that previously had bug 1126669 (which also
first occurred with this switch off; the last known successful start
with it off was this January), but this appears to be a different
problem, as disabling the splash screen (Esc key) or changing the
graphics driver don't help.
