As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases, Ubuntu 12.10 reached EOL on May
16, 2014.

Is this reproducible in a supported release?

My problems were fixed in Ubuntu 13.04. This may not affect the original

Switching to a Radeon 6670 GPU also eliminates the misbehavior.
