My Acer Travelmate also does not wake from Suspend. I am using Ubuntu 8.10 I have attached my dmesg output for review. Situation: when I leave my laptop ON and go away from it for awhile it goes to the Suspend mode. When push a key (usually I push the space bar) my background will display without the panels. Nokey will work, even the [Ctr] + [Alt] + [Backspace] sequence. You will be able to test suspend to RAM while just running the Live CD. I too have the 'on wake' from sleep black screen of death with a small box of vertical wavy lines. I am running Feisty on a HP Pavillion dv6000. Using vbetools as per http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=443747 , suspend now works. I get back to the desktop after, but wireless isn't working at all (a different bug no doubt). I mention feisty, but have not tried any other distros.
