[Bug 1176131] Re: Please add Acroread package to the Partner repository for Ubuntu Saucy and Trusty

2016-06-28 Thread A
As acroread has been marked deprecated please provide a pointer to the
software that takes its place. PDF files and their features have not
gone away yet.

No idea why this was marked triaged in the first place. acroread is
deprecated software.

[Bug 1176131] Re: Please add Acroread package to the Partner repository for Ubuntu Saucy and Trusty

2014-02-13 Thread Terabyte
Petar's comment does not work at all for me, on Ubuntu 13.10.

After installing AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i486linux_enu.bin I get the error
error while loading shared libraries: libgdk_pixbuf_xlib-2.0.so.0: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory'.

So install install libgtk2.0.0:i386. However...

sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-0:i386
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
 libgtk2.0-0:i386 : Depends: libpangocairo-1.0-0:i386 (= 1.28.3) but it is not
going to be installed
Depends: libpangoft2-1.0-0:i386 (= 1.28.3) but it is not
going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Hence, I go ahead and try to install libpangocairo-1.0-0:i386, which leads to
other dependency errors. Going through the chain of depencies, I eventually try
to install libgraphite2-3:i386. However, then the following occurs (see below),
likely showing that I I should not go ahead... so no acrobat for me.

[Bug 1176131] Re: Please add Acroread package to the Partner repository for Ubuntu Saucy and Trusty

2014-01-30 Thread drs305
Like Petar, I was able to get Acrobat to run by adding a few additional
files.

I just installed the daily build of Trusty amd64 and downloaded the
Acrobat deb file from Adobe. I have not installed Wine.

Acrobat failed to run until I copied the libstdc... and libxml2.so...
(files links) from an earlier version of Ubuntu. These files are
located in the previous installation's /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu folder.
If you start acroread from a terminal you can see which files are
missing as it attempts to start.

I accomplished this before reading Petar's post, so I don't know if
installing libgtk2.0... would have worked for me or not.

[Bug 1176131] Re: Please add Acroread package to the Partner repository for Ubuntu Saucy and Trusty

2014-01-10 Thread Christoffer Holmstedt
I just installed Xubuntu 14.04 and came across this problem. The only
reason I need acroread is that others in my team use Windows version
and annotates text. The annotations are not visible in evince but if
there are other PDF readers that support this I see no reason why
acroread should stay if it's already EOL.

Yes, AcroRead is here mainly to support
some rare proprietary Adobe PDF extensions,
e. g. look at bug #944953 (definitely a curious one).

[Bug 1176131] Re: Please add Acroread package to the Partner repository for Ubuntu Saucy and Trusty

2013-12-22 Thread Norbert
It seems that Adobe has no Linux versions of modern Reader: according to
http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/tech-specs.html there are no X and XI for
Linux.
May be it is not safe to use 9.5.5 on Linux because of low security
(http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Google-warns-of-using-Adobe-Reader-particularly-on-Linux-1668153.html).

I have had some problems with PDF Portfolio files. I viewed them in
Adobe Reader X (or XI, I do not remember exactly) installed to Wine.
Adobe Reader works normally on Wine.

I wonder why Adobe still provides downloads of Reader 9.5,
not only for Linux x86, but also for MS Win 7 (along with 10.1.4 11.0.04),

Acroread for Linux is end of life, and doesn't get security updates
anymore.

If anything, we should be _removing_ it from the partner archive (or at
least disabling the browser plugin).
