[Bug 117884] Re: xvidcore should be in universe, not multiverse

[Bug 117884] Re: xvidcore should be in universe, not multiverse
I agree. Many universe packages like blender, me-tv, xine, even gimp- plugin-registry depend on this, and having it in multiverse causes these not possible to install if one chooses not to use multiverse (like I do, because otherwise some truly non-free software might get installed easily). -- xvidcore should be in universe, not multiverse https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117884 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

See also similar bug #214727, the whole mplayer thing should be handled at the same time probably. -- xvidcore should be in universe, not multiverse https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117884 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 117884] Re: xvidcore should be in universe, not multiverse
Since there is a update policy for patents (see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/PatentPolicy) and there is a similar package in universe (x264), I would like re-open this bug to include this package in universe. libxvidcore is a depend of mplayer, and it need to be in universe to allow mplayer to do the same. As Matthew said, the software is under the GPL, so there is no reason to not allow it in universe. ** Changed in: xvidcore (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New ** Changed in: xvidcore (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Wishlist -- xvidcore should be in universe, not multiverse https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117884 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 117884] Re: xvidcore should be in universe, not multiverse
There's plenty of software that may infringe patents in universe. mp32ogg is just one example of many. These packages can't be in main, but they can be in universe if the copyright license is free. -- xvidcore should be in universe, not multiverse https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117884 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
