Update.

It is a weird issue.  I've gone to my preferences, changed the GTK engine and 
it works.
I then went back to the older engine, and it also works.

However, I still get some weird symbol errors (!) --- yet it works (!?).

/home/ $ /usr/bin/emacs
/usr/lib/kde3/plugins/styles/keramik.so: undefined symbol: _ZN7QGCache5clearEv
/usr/lib/kde3/plugins/styles/light.so could not be unloaded
/usr/bin/emacs: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/kde3/plugins/styles/keramik.so: 
undefined symbol: _ZN18QMetaObjectCleanUpD1Ev

I was previously using the default B3/KDE style.  Changed to Plastic,
Keramik and then reverted back to B3/KDE.
