I have reason to believe that this issue is now resolved for me with Linux 3.8.0-31, which appears to be the healthiest kernel so far without resorting to trying the mainline kernel. After already a number of boot-ups, I'm pleased to say that I've not suffered from any black screen of death problems as I did with the kernels mentioned in the title of this bug report. For me at least, this bug may be closed. Hmmm Today I tried booting up again and it went back to the black screen of death with nothing more than a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I shut down, and booted it up again and it got the login screen. The behaviour seems random. So, to conclude, it seems that the problem is not yet solved, despite the BIOS update. Shame. P.S. (FYI - I have now got a new problem though -- my battery reports it to be at 84%, but in windows this is 100%. So there appears to be some miscommunication between my hardware and xubuntu/kernel. Fan also seems a little more active than it was..sigh - something for a seperate new bug reportso much for a BIOS update). Christopher Barton, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Christopher, I have just updated the BIOS to version 219 and am pleased to say that I have now been able to boot into the latest kernel 3.8.0-29. sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date Output: UX31A.219 06/14/2013 Thanks for pointing me in the right direction on this... There is little or no change log on the Asus website regarding the BIOS, so was initially hesitant in case of problems, but am mighty pleased this issue seems to have been resolved (touch wood!).
