@noskcaj: My understanding is before we can sync, we need to transition
from libxmpi4c2 to libxmpi4 and this can only be done during an LTS
release.

The xmpi package has carried an Ubuntu delta since the CXX transition in Breezy.
My intention in the patch against version 2.2.3b8-13.1 in Debian attached to 
comment #1 is to re-synchronize with Debian.
I believe that if this is done during the 14.04 LTS development cycle, the 
Ubuntu delta can be completely dropped in 14.10.
