Just download the tarball from www.childsplay.mobi and run from source until Ubuntu decides to package the upstream stable version. The problem is that the packaged version in ubuntu is very old. I have the same problem in Linux Mint 16 with KDE. As I'm the author of childsplay I can confirm that the latest version of childsplay will run without any problems on ubuntu >=12.04.
