There seems to be a way to avoid laptop lid freeze. I'm using Lubuntu 14.04 and it utilises Xfce power manager. When it is used to monitor power events, lid close always freezes the laptop. However, when you install acpi-support the freeze no longer happens but the screen remains on when the lid is closed. If you just want to power off your screen when closed, go to Xfce power manager settings and choose 'nothing' in the 'when laptop lid is closed' field. If you want your laptop to suspend when the lid is closed, you need to exit Xfce power manager to let acpi-support handle the event. So the key seems to be to install acpi-support to avoid freeze. Good luck and please post what power manager you are using. This is unbelievable! It no longer works so the freeze is back again. I didn't change anything, it just worked for some time and now it reverted back to old behaviour. If I suspend the laptop using the suspend menu entry or CRTL+ESC button first, wake it up properly and after that close the lid, the hang doesn't happen. That could explain why I thought I had found a workaround before. I must have suspended the laptop using keyboard shortcuts and then the lid close worked fine which led me to believe that I had found the solution to the problem. I have tried many times the procedure before and I'm confident the behaviour is persistent. Suspend the laptop using suspend menu or keyboard shortcut first - lid close NO freeze no matter how many times afterwards I suspend it and wake it up. I reboot the laptop and close the lid - freeze occurs. Dell D505 latitude still crashes in ubuntu 14.04 when I close the lid. I found that this issue exists with any release that uses Kernel 3.7 or newer. I currently use Kubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Dell Latitude D505, because I am unable to use any newer, supported, release. Quantal works fine, but it is verging on EOL. As an alternative, I can install the linux-generic-lts-quantal package onto my LTS. I have even tested the alpha release of Kubuntu 14.04 and still have issues with the system halting, when the lid is closed. In short, Kernels 3.2 (Precise) and 3.5 (Quantal) have no hardware issues with the laptop lid switch. kalehrl, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com /daily-live/current/ . When I close the lid, the screen becomes blank and the mouse cursor freezes and can't be moved. The backlight is still on but the system is completely unresponsive. I can't even ssh into the laptop to shut it down properly but have to pull the plug. When I go to suspend from the logout menu, it suspends fine and I can close the lid and when I lift it it wakes properly. I tried changing the options in xfce-power-manager to disable suspend but to no avail. I also tried editing the /etc/systemd/logind.conf but nothing worked. Whenever the lid is closed system hangs.
