I can trigger the bug with docky anytime I want. Just move quickly through Docky icons with the mouse cursor (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/docky/+bug/1451379). I a few seconds the screen will freeze. Most of the times I have to wait for about 30 seconds. I can switch to text (Alt + Ctrl + F1) in the meantime and see that gnome-shell occupies the computer 100%. Nouveau driver writes lots of lines into syslog at the same time. But sometimes everything freezes and only hard reset helps. I never get it with chromium, but I do with mplayer when the window size is larger than a quarter of my screen. Not reliable reproduction. Seems to be a race that happens once every 30 minutes or so at that size. This seems to be happening to me also on 14.04, GeForce 6600 AGP, Nouveau. I believe I encountered the same issue while working on bug #1412602
which is unrelated to this bug.
In the process of testing the nouveau driver with an nVidia C61 [GeForce
7025 / nForce 630a] chipset on Ubuntu GNOME Trusty with the Utopic HWE
and 3.16.0-31-generic from trusty-proposed I experienced what I'd call a
soft-lockup (I could still move the mouse pointer but all else was
unresponsive) and after a minute or two the screen went basically blank
with this message sprawled across the screen:

Maybe is needed to try a temporal or a permanent disabling (deactivation) of nouveau driver, by blacklisting the driver. Temporal is done by using the kernel parameter nouveau.blacklist=yes. Permanent is done by adding the line 'blacklist nouveau' in the end of file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. Affects me since ubuntu 12.04 with Intel+nVidia dual card combination where is impossible to use proprietary driver. 2RickB: Try ctrl-alt-F1 to switch to console for login and reboot. This works for me. Depending on how it crashes, ctrl-alt-F1 may or may not work. Obviously, when it works, a clean reboot is possible. Same or nearly the same bug affects me, with Xubuntu 14.04. Graphics card is GE7300. Thought it might be associated with light-locker switching VT but removing light-locker makes no difference.
