Public bug reported: I have several ubuntu 12.04 systems. On testing some of them to upgrade to 14.04, a few of them fail.
All the systems where updated to the moment before the trusty upgrade, so they where running 12.04.04 at upgrade time. The ones that work file, seem to be installed recently. Installs from like 12.04.02 or later, maybe 12.04.01 also, but not sure. The older ones, fail after the first reboot, grub hangs with a blinking curser. The Loading Grub appears and vanishs almost instantly, and grub refuses to display the menu. If I boot a recovery cd, and manually re-install grub to the harddrive, using install-grub /dev/sda, there is no more failures. So it appears on systems that don't have a new enough grub bootloader code, the upgrade fails to upgrade it, making the system unbootable. ** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1300346 Title: Upgrade from Precise fails to boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1300346/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
