I have set up a PPA for daily builds of xfdesktop4 (and xfwm4). I pushed a patch to xfdesktop that should fix the issue eveyone was seeing. There was a little mixup between my color1s and color2s which means it was looking for the color settings in the wrong places. There's a bit of a mixup in the code, there's color 2s where there should be color 1s. With these corrected the colors should properly be loaded and old versions should be migrated.
