I realize I'm tilting at windmills here, but the need is being able to build statically linked binaries. I don't see the harm in providing that option for those who need it. Upstream has repeatedly stated that they don't support building static libraries, and --enable-static is explicitly switched off (configure: error: --enable-static is not supported by systemd). If you have a proper use case for that, you are welcome to discuss that http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/systemd-devel . But this is quite some work, and please understand that I won't work on that myself -- we have no use case for that in Ubuntu (or Debian) and want to discourage static linking. I'm happy to do the packaging bits if/once systemd supports static libraries, then we can reopen this downstream bug.
