Are you using the recommended openprinting-ppds:0/ppd/openprinting/Brother/BR8480_2_GPL.ppd Brother MFC-8480DN BR-Script3 printer driver? The apport-collect info will tell us. As an alternative according to the specifications of the Brother MFC-8480DN it also supports PCL6. So you can also try if a Generic PCL6 driver especially Foomatic/pxlmono or Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e for this B/W laser printer gives better results.
