functionality after I installed the updates and rebooted.
  
  I updated gpointing-device-settings through Synaptic.  Although I recall
  that this wasn't always so, currently there are touchpad settings in
  Mouse  Touchpad, but still no functionality.

The touchpad didn't work at all when I performed an identical reinstall:
flashdrive iso of 14.04.1  LTS, checked boxes  for  updates and 3rd
party software.

It's  a brand new laptop.
