sorry for this late reply. in the mean time, we have a newer version of auctex in the archives. I cannot reproduce these compilation issues with the new version. Sorry about that. I'm coming across some similar reports in Debian, and it looks like they've released a fix. If you could, please download their auctex package from http://packages.debian.org/sid/auctex/all/download and let me know if this fixes the problem. If so, I will file a request to sync that package from Debian before gutsy is released. This is not a duplicate of 134717. That bug is against feisty-backports and only discusses backporting while this is a bug in auctex in gutsy.
