Public bug reported:

upgrading from kubuntu 14.04 to 14.10,

got a pop-up window saying "could not install 'grub-common'" and

subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status
1

this was followed by another opo-up windows that said: "could not install the 
upgrade. your system could be in an unstable state.
a recovery will run m=now (dpkg --configure -a)."

At the same time I got a separate request to restart the system.
