Hello, can you try the fix proposed in bug 129910 fixes the issue ? (basically, add fbcon to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, run sudo update-initramfs -u, and reboot with vga=whatever). I can confirm it in Gutsy (kernel 2.6.22-12-generic). I have the same problem with framebuffer kernel parameters vga=791 (1024x768) or vga=839 (1600x1200).
