[Bug 1414693] Re: Sound panel in System Settings fails to recognise built-in audio

2015-02-08 Thread David Chatterton
I have noticed, when running processor-intensive apps such as Handbrake
or FlightGear, that the inbuilt speakers become crackly but can often be
restored by repeatedly activating the Test Sound Button.

Might I suggest that this is caused by a conflict of interrupts?

[Bug 1414693] Re: Sound panel in System Settings fails to recognise built-in audio

2015-01-28 Thread David Chatterton
When pluggin in a microphone, the Unknown Audio Device window pops up
and the microphone can be selected. The Microphone - built-in Audio menu
items appears in the System Settings Sound Input window as expected
and any sound picked up by the microphone shows up as a moving segment
in the Input level display. The input can be switched to the Internal
Microphone and this shows an appropriate Input Level on the display.

What also happens is that a Headset Microphone item appears in the Input
list as well as Headphones item in the Output list. The sound output can
still be directed through the Speakers (which is not the case when a
pair of headphones is plugged in and identified as the presence of these
headphone prevents sound being sent to the speakers). This, of course,
verifies that the sound output is under the control of the software.

This behaviour is therefore inconsistent with the selection made of the
Unknown Audio Device.

When connecting a pair of Bluetooth headphones, their menu item appears
in the Output window and the mode can be selected between High Fidelity
Playback (A2DP) or Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP). However, when in the
Telephony Duplex mode, one might have expected the headset's built-in
microphone to appear in the Input window. The microphone works when the
headphones are connected to a mobile phone which automatically switches
the mode from A2DP to Telephony Duplex when making or receiving a
telephone call. It is reasonable to expect the Bluetooth headphones'
microphone to be available to the Sound System for use with video call
apps for which the Dell XPS13 is equipped by having a built-in webcam
and internal microphones.
