OK, this looks like a regression in GTK2. I have installed Ubuntu MATE 14.04 on i386. All works fine. Yep, I am using ubuntu mate 14.04. Notification area crashes on every login. Has to be reloaded. @stevecook172001 Are you sure you mean 14.04? Please post the output of `lsb_release -a` on the affected computer. I have 15.04 running on two partitions of two laptops; one an older i386 and the newer an AMD64. I experience the bug on the former upon every boot but not at all on the latter.
