Stuart Bishop, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you
please report this problem to them following the instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#Broadcom_STA_Wireless_driver
?

Please advise on any response you receive.

Thank you for your understanding.

Stuart Bishop, just to clarify, is wifi power management on when this
happens?

If so, does turning it off via the following terminal command change anything:
iwconfig wlan0 power off

I'm again getting regular network drops with 3.19.0-14.14. Logs indicate
the same problem as originally reported.

No problems during normal operation for a few days. The suspend/resume
issue is a separate bug. Flagging this one INVALID.

[Bug 1432659] Re: HP Pavilion 13-b208tu w/ Broadcom BCM43142 Wifi unstable, panics

2015-03-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
** Description changed:

This new laptop's wireless connection (HP Pavilion 13-b208tu, Broadcom
- BCM43142) is disconnecting every few minutes. This corresponds to panics
- and tracebacks in the kernel log.
+ BCM43142) is disconnecting every few minutes after coming up from a
+ restart or shutdown. This corresponds to panics and tracebacks in the
+ kernel log.

The laptop was freshly installed with Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic), and
disconnections were seen. I then upgraded it to Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid
developement release), and am still experiencing the problem. The
Broadcom proprietary driver is being used, and seems to be the only one
  available for this device.

2015-03-24 Thread Stuart Bishop
I have opened Bug #1435728 for the suspend/resume issue.

The original failure reported on this bug happened during normal
operation. So far with the F.24 bios and current Vivid things have been
stable, and I will flag this bug Invalid in a few days if they remain
so.

2015-03-23 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Stuart Bishop, introducing suspend/resume drastically changes the
dynamic of this report.

Hence, was the original problem of "Wifi unstable, panics" only
occurring after resuming from suspend, or did it happen when coming up
from a restart/shutdown?

[Bug 1432659] Re: HP Pavilion 13-b208tu w/ Broadcom BCM43142 Wifi unstable, panics

2015-03-23 Thread Stuart Bishop
Router firmmware has been updated, although I don't think that can help
us diagnose the fault.

I wasn't able to reproduce today through normal use, but am able to
trigger a failure using suspend/resume. Is this the same bug, and maybe
a pointer to an ultimate fix?

[Bug 1432659] Re: HP Pavilion 13-b208tu w/ Broadcom BCM43142 Wifi unstable, panics

2015-03-19 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Stuart Bishop, as per
http://www.asus.com/Networking/DSLN10/HelpDesk_Download/ an update to
your router's buggy and outdated firmware is available (1.0.5.2). If you
update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate
does it change anything?

Once the firmware is updated, and the information above is provided,
then please mark this report Status New.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1432659] Re: HP Pavilion 13-b208tu w/ Broadcom BCM43142 Wifi unstable, panics

2015-03-19 Thread Stuart Bishop
I saw a similar problems with 14.10. I do not know if the kernel logs
were similar, but could try to capture one with a LiveCD if it will
help. I only had 14.10 on there a few days before upgrading.

The Wifi access point is an Asus DSL-N10, hardware version B1 running
firmware version 1.0.4.9.

2015-03-19 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Stuart Bishop, given F.26 is such a pain, for now, let us move forward,
and we can always circle back on it.

+ Did this problem not occur in a previous release? If so, which one(s)
specifically? If you don't know/haven't tested, could you please test
prior releases via http://releases.ubuntu.com/ and advise to the
results?

+ Could you please provide the router manufacturer, model, and firmware
version this issue is reproducible on?

[Bug 1432659] Re: HP Pavilion 13-b208tu w/ Broadcom BCM43142 Wifi unstable, panics

2015-03-19 Thread Stuart Bishop
The failure to boot Ubuntu 15.04 with the F.26 bios was reproduced with
a USB recovery (bypassing any mess the BIOS update did to /boot), and
after checking all the bios settings (there are very, very few things to
twiddle on this model).

With F.24, I am still seeing failures identical to the one in the bug
description (apart from the bios revision). In addition, wireless fails
to come back at all after a resume (but this looks like a different bug,
as the traces involve bluetooth).

I'll set this bug back to confirmed, but I understand if it needs to go
back to incomplete until I can get the bios updated to F.26

2015-03-18 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Stuart Bishop, one thing to keep in mind as noted in the previously
provided support article, is some BIOS updates change around things (ex.
adding new settings without telling you, changing BIOS settings CSM+UEFI
to Secure Boot in my situation with a Windows 8.1 laptop, or messing
around with the /boot/efi/EFI/ folder).

[Bug 1432659] Re: HP Pavilion 13-b208tu w/ Broadcom BCM43142 Wifi unstable, panics

2015-03-18 Thread Stuart Bishop
That was interesting. I eventually worked out how to get the BIOS
updated (which requires a Windows 8.1 machine to unpack the BIOS, and
combining it onto an HP_TOOLS UEFI diagnostics stick since any HP_TOOLS
partition I had went with the Ubuntu install).

f.26 would not boot at all. Get to grub, choose recovery mode, and it
gets as far as the second line about a RAM disk when it hangs and
requires powering off. HP diagnostics seem to think everything was OK. I
didn't try booting FreeDOS or a Win8.1 stick (I'm low on USB sticks).

Downgrading to f.24 got the system booting again. So I'm now slightly
more up to date.

If people are running similar laptops with f.26 I'd be interested in
hearing about it - perhaps somehow the flash went bad.

I'll twiddle the incomplete flag on this bug after I've run with the
f.24 bios for a bit.

Stuart Bishop, as per
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-144120-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4158&productOid=7597682&sw_lang=&product=7597681
an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available
(F.26). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the
output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then
please mark this report Status New.

Thank you for your understanding.
