I'm using Ubuntu Dapper on some elderly hardware. As with Jan Kalab, this has happened to me a number of times after a period of inactivity. I have a similar issue, gnome session sometimes suddenly ends. But it has never happened when I was working, only after long time of inactivity, so I don't know if it's the same bug. But it didn't happened in feisty.
