install synaptic and search for virtualbox. there should be some virtualbox package that hasn't been cleaned. For example, I just upgraded from 14.04 to 15.04, but I had long since stopped running the relatively ancient Ubuntu package in favor of the official Oracle package. But now I am stuck in a loop. Removing the official version is not sufficient.
