Same problem on my machine with the Hardy Heron install CD. The graphical output is not shown if the TFT is connected to the DVI channel (blank screen). The log output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks OK and if I connect the display to VGA everything is OK. No changes if I try to set the Option CrtcNumber ... @Bryce I tried after an update and dist-upgrade and removed all the nvidia-* packages from my system. Did a sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg and rebooted. After that the rainbow of flashing colours remains and I can't see gdm. Am getting the same thing with Lenovo T61 ThinkPad which has nVidia Quadro NVS 140M inside. There's nothing on the screen, though - once it kicks up into graphics mode, the screen is just black. Would be good if there was some kind of fallback position, as those of use taking the first faltering steps with Linux are very likely to be put off by a black screen and no response at all, such a short distance into the Ubuntu experience. I know I can cold start the machine and select safe graphics mode, but it's a bad first impression! A colleague with a slightly later release of same machine has no problem booting liveCD, and the open source nVidia drivers are working just fine for him now he's all installed. I've just done an install using the release version of Ubuntu Gutsy and the issue still exists when using the live cd. Using safe mode allows access. When installing the restricted nvidia drivers onto a properly installed instance of Gutsy they seem to work albeit the driver defaults output to the secondary monitor rather than the laptop lcd. I'm also seeing similar breakage with the latest Gutsy update. It used to work fine on Tribe 5 but now I've seen the same rainbowish effects. I've finally managed to get back into the vesa driver and the resolution is stuck at 800*600. Hi Bryce, Feisty is fine, as is edgy and dapper. I think that gutsy's default is to run the live cd with compositing enabled isn't it? If so, I think that's most likely the problem in this case. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg Problem: When booting the Gutsy beta Live CD in default mode, graphics fail when using an Nvidia Geforce4 440 Go on my Higrade laptop computer. Instead of seeing the expected screens, the screen presented is black with white horizontal 'flecks' across it. There are no error messages. After waiting for 10 minutes there is no change. Reproduction: On a laptop featuring the Nvidia Geforce4 440 Go mobile graphics chip, using the Gutsy beta Live CD, select the install or start Ubuntu menu. Wait. You should have the problem above. Please attach output from lspci -vvnn and your /var/log/Xorg.0.log. If possible, a photo or screenshot displaying the graphics corruption issue could be of value. Also, does this error occur with Feisty? Hi Bryce, I'm happy to do that but how do I access these files from the live CD session after the screen has blanked out? It doesn't drop to the shell. The error doesn't occur with Feisty.
