I still see the flicker (and sometimes text) when I log out in Karmic. It should just smoothly transition back to the gdm. I am using Karmic. This may have been fixed. I am unsure. The screen goes black for 2 seconds or so, but I don't know whether there is any mode switch, there might not be. It still occurs in hardy.
