I actually have a fix for this. The reason why the daemon is dying is
because dbus is disabled in avahi and the configuration expects DBUS to
be enabled for status checking. Make sure you have "enable-dbus=yes" in
avahi-daemon.conf :)

Confirming what appears to be the same or very similar issue on Ubuntu
16.04.3. The starting of avahi-daemon and SIGTERM after about a minute
is a cyclical process, repeating every few minutes or hours:
