Public bug reported:

I am using two Dell 2005fpw wide screen monitors and an nvidia quatro nv280.
I can enable the restricted modules and get the resolution to 1680x1050 one the
default screen.
the problems comes when i try to enable the second screen.
when i do that using the Screen and Graphics Preferences different things
happen.
1. I restart and the resolution on the default screen becomes 1900x1200 ( even
thought i had 1680x1050 selected )
2. i try to set it back and restart and i get the fail safe message that there
was a problem with the screen settings.
3. I use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and fix the problem but it only sets one
screen.
4. If i use the nvidia-xconfig it seems to work but i cant open a terminal
neither i can enable the desktop effects ( which the work fine with one screen )
5. I try different combinations of the above in different orders and wither i
get a screen that is wide and the terminal doesn't work or I get a secondary
screen that displays nonsense colors and blings.
6. I try removing the restricted nvidia-glx and reinstalling them but it
doesn't help.

7. Important note. when i get the failsafe screen ( if i click continue it
doesnt continue ) if i try to setup two screen it goes back to failsafe.

my system is a sun workstation with dual amd processors. I installed
the Gutsy 7.10 beta and have all the updates ( universe, multiverse,
backports everything that is available)

I know it can be fixed by manually editing the xorg.conf file but this
seems to be a bug of the new screen and graphics preference.
