Max May, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. [Bug 1544936] Re: PPC: no mpeg-2 video playback
Just reckognized that this but is not about output modules but Input/Codec... Sorry, my fault! But nevertheless my machine plays mpeg2 files with Input/Codec Decode=Auto just fine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1544936 Title: PPC: no mpeg-2 video playback To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/1544936/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1544936] Re: PPC: no mpeg-2 video playback
I can not trigger this bug on my PowerBook 5,6. I get the same "libGL error: failed to load driver: r300"-errors, but the mpeg2 video I tested is played with default settings (video output set so automatic). You can check which output modules are availabe on your machine with "vlc -l | grep -i videooutput": $ vlc -l | grep -i videoausgabe VLC media player 2.2.2 Weatherwax (revision 2.2.2-0-g6259d80) directfb DirectFB-Videoausgabe http://www.directfb.org/ gl OpenGL-Videoausgabe (experimentell) xcb_glxOpenGL GLX Videoausgabe (XCB) aa ASCII-Art-Videoausgabe gles1 Videoausgabe basierend auf OpenGL für Integrierte Systeme xcb_x11X11-Videoausgabe (XCB) yuvYUV-Videoausgabe xcb_xv XVideoausgabe (XCB) caca Farbige ASCII-Art-Videoausgabe gles2 Videoausgabe basierend auf OpenGL für Integrierte Systeme 2 vdummy Dummy-Videoausgabe vdummy Statistiken-Videoausgabe You can test the output modules specifically, e.g. with "vlc -V xcb_xv". On my PowerBook 5,6 directfb shows no picture and gles1 shows a broken picture. The rest works, albeith some very slowly.

How can I prevent that VLC uses the GPU to decode mpeg-2 videos? VLC works well with mp4 or h.264 and uses (obviously) the CPU on the PowerBook. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1544936 Title: PPC: no mpeg-2 video playback To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/1544936/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1544936] Re: PPC: no mpeg-2 video playback
In that log, MPEG2 Video is decoded by your GPU, so there is very little to nothing that VLC can do about the performance. [Bug 1544936] Re: PPC: no mpeg-2 video playback
As mentioned before h.264 playback is OK on the PowerBook ( ~50% cpu load). But with mpeg-2 videos, the cpu load turns up to 100%, and the video window becomes green.
