Re: [Bug 1573722] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 grub2 installation problem
I've just changed the live distro image on usb disk, no change in boot. The 14.04 had no problem then. If you booted the cd in bios mode instead of efi mode, then indeed, it would have no problem installing without an EFI system partition. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1573722 Title: Ubuntu 16.04 grub2 installation problem To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/1573722/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 1573722] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 grub2 installation problem
I still think that this is a bug, as 14.04 had no problem installing without the EFI partition in manual mode. [Bug 1573722] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 grub2 installation problem
Yes, you need to create an EFI system partition to install in EFI mode. This is done automatically if you choose to format the drive and install only Ubuntu, but if you are doing a side by side install, you need to heed the warning that you should install in bios mode, and if doing a manual install, you are on your own. ** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1573722 Title: Ubuntu 16.04 grub2 installation problem To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/1573722/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1573722] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 grub2 installation problem
I've found workaround: create EFI System partition at the beginning of the disk. Then the installer manages to do the job. This is mentioned in the manual: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI#Creating_an_EFI_System_Partition ,but as /boot FAT32 partition which is not longer relevant in installer as it does not allow to create /boot at FAT32. However I still think this is workaround as 14.04 installer had no problems with my UEFI and didn't need extra /boot partition (at least I need not to create it) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1573722 Title: Ubuntu 16.04 grub2 installation problem To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/1573722/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1573722] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 grub2 installation problem
The UEFI warning: This machine's firmware has started the installer in UEFI mode but it looks like there may be existing operating systems already installed using "BIOS compatibility mode". If you continue to install Debian in UEFI mode, it might be difficult to reboot the machine into any BIOS-mode operating systems later. If you wish to install in UEFI mode and don't care about keeping the ability to boot one of the existing systems, you have the option to force that here. If you wish to keep the option to boot an existing operating system, you should choose NOT to force UEFI installation here.
