[Bug 1575484] Re: "Set document metadata failed"

2017-06-12 Thread WinEunuchs2Unix
You get this error when elevating privileges to root using sudo, gksu or
pkexec. Further you can't set default tab stops, tabs to spaces, font,
it doesn't return to last save position and the entire top line menu
dissappears.

I'm curious whether creating an account called "root" will setup
configuration files for gedit to save to???

"If I recall correctly from a previous discussion about this sort of
thing, the problem is that when you su to root a lot of your environment
which is required for the correct running of Gnome GUI apps is not set
up appropriately. The consensus from the developers seemed to be that
running GUIs as root was generally a bad idea and should not be
encouraged."

Translation: We hate you all, you will learn vi, suck on it.

Not having a working editor is generally considered to be a problem in
an operating system. The problem has only been there for like 5 years.

Like Donald Trump, Linux succeeds only by setting expectations so low
they are easy to exceed.

[Bug 1575484] Re: "Set document metadata failed"

2016-08-08 Thread Daniel Henrique
I'm with the same problem when I try to edit grub config file. So
searched over another places and found this:

"If I recall correctly from a previous discussion about this sort of thing, the
problem is that when you su to root a lot of your environment which is required
for the correct running of Gnome GUI apps is not set up appropriately. The
consensus from the developers seemed to be that running GUIs as root was
generally a bad idea and should not be encouraged.

Perhaps an alternative (nano?) or just use vi."
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=303374

If I've understood right I've to switch to another editor. So I'll try
the same line in terminal switching "gedit" for "nano".

I've switched to "sudo nano gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg" and sucess until
now. I've to reboot and see if grub is now with the new settings ready
to go.

So, good luck to you'll all and I'll be back, if my note don't explode.
