In my case I hit this error message while doing completely unrelated stuff. No terminal or Software window open. This points to some sort of problem with debconf on your system. Were
you shown any configuration prompts while installing these packages, and
if so, what did you do with those prompts? Is this probelem
reproducible?
You say 'aptitude' - so you were running aptitude from the commandline
when this happened?
