[Bug 158024] Re: cp command freezes desktop

2009-11-21 Thread Jacob Popov
Well, I can't reproduce the bug any more (in karmic and jaunty). Maybe
it's because I switched to Ubuntu completely (my Windows activates no
more, I've managed to kill it at last :-) ) and re-formatted all
partitions in EXT3. Yet I'm pretty sure the bug has been fixed since I
get no errors while copying to NTFS and FAT memory sticks.

I'd say the bug has 'Fix Released'.

Can you try the latest pre-release for Jaunty and let us know your
results. You should be able to test via a LiveCD.

[Bug 158024] Re: cp command freezes desktop

2008-11-19 Thread Jacob Popov
Yes, it is. The freeze usually happens when copying files with nautilus
or something. the cp command seems more stable, but sometimes it causes
freezes too.

Seems that ntfs3g is more prone to freezing, while fat32 is also
affected. I never got freeze with ext3.

This is definitely a major problem but I still can't find the package
causing it.

Alas, seems the live cd was a fluke, the freeze occurs with it too. This

[Bug 158024] Re: cp command freezes desktop

2008-09-24 Thread Petri Väkeväinen
Hello,

the freeze occurs on my machine as well, I have three different SATA
harddrives on my computer, and I even tried with 3 others as well. The
freeze seems to occur anywhere between 5GB to 20GB. My motherboard is
quite old, 4 years or so, ASUS A7V600-X A, and it's SATA controller only
supports 1.5Gbps transport.

The freeze occurs also when files are copied over in smaller sets, I
tried with a script that copied over files less than 3GB each and slept
10minutes between each single copy.

The freeze doesn't occur when the drives aren't used at maximum write
speed, I have a DVB card and I can store the transport stream from there
with no problem. (A few GB's per hour)

Also, the freeze doesn't seem to occur with Intrepid Alpha 6 live cd, as
I just successfully copied 100GB ok. I'm going to repeat that with some
500GB tomorrow, I let you know how that goes.

Re: [Bug 158024] Re: cp command freezes desktop

2008-03-19 Thread willisoften
Have you tried using xargs to copy folder by folder ?

The following should copy all files recursively from directory $1
to directory $2, and echo each move command just before doing it:

ls $1 | xargs -I {} -t cp -Rv $1/{} $2/{}

I'm not at my machine at the moment so it's untested.

It should work - it may be just that somewhere there are just too
many files to be passed into cp -
normally though I'd expect a too many arguments error and I'm not
seeing any such thing.

If your machine bursts in to flames, runs riot, shoots your puppies
and eats your girlfriend,
I will naturally refuse to take any responsibility.

Good luck!

This is really annoying when you try to backup 500GB :(
Still, the problem seems to kind of common, since a friend of mine has the same

Tentatively assigning this to coreutils as it provieds the cp

[Bug 158024] Re: cp command freezes desktop

2007-11-29 Thread Ward
I encountered the same error. The situation:
- Fully up-to-date Ubuntu server 7.10 (one week old!)
- Two harddisks (all checked, they're fine) Both master, disk 1 on first
channel, disk 2 on second channel)
   - Disk 1: 2 partitions, both ext3, one mounted as root, other as /media/sda2.
   - Disk 2: 1 partition, reiserfs, mounted as /home. They are both 'normal'
harddisks, connected via the IDE channels.
- Log on via SSH (Putty on windows client)
- Copying with "sudo cp -Ruv /home/share /media/sda2" starts fine, but after
approx 15GB it stops, system hangs, doesn't respond, new SSH connections are
refused. Pinging the server does work. Only way out is a hard reboot (pressing
the on/off button). The logs show no strange messages around the time of
the crash and since the filesystem journals show no problems either.
