I also had this after upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04. I did not change any ding settings before. I can confirm the issue and that both suggestions fix the issue, i.e. adding "-a" to the egrep options or switching to the internal grep implementation. I cannot tell if I have changed this in my 14.04 install before upgrading (if that was possible at all, I cannot remember the GUI at all). I suppose, you configured ding to use egrep for searching the dictionary? Please try, whether it helps to add "-a" to the egrep options.
