I was pretty happy with Ubuntu's 4.8 kernel too since the keyboard continued working, however unfortunately it now has stopped again at 4.8.0-17-generic and for some reason it still doesn't work when booting to 4.8.0-11-generic with which I'd assume I have typed with the internal keyboard as that was the previous kernel installed. This just as a comment, not related to this bug now about backporting and also I can't file a new bug since I don't know why exactly it stopped working again. Timo Jyrinki, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 4.4 to 4.7 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this good commit has been identified, it may be reviewed for backporting. This is the first installation, no prior version. This bug seems fixed with 4.7, luckily, since not requiring external keyboard is neat. Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?
