Hi Malcolm,
This sounds like it might be a hardware issue, I've seen this sort of
behaviour before with failing/damaged touch screens; to test that could
you install the finger paint app from the store, and try drawing over
the problematic area, if that area of the touch screen is damaged you'll
probably see the line you're drawing jumping from one side of the
damaged area to the other.
