All I can say is that it is not Metacity bug. It is bug in nautilus... https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=e1649a30606d0c9906510f1e9b3fbf545979823b With upstream nautilus 3.24.0 background should work also without compositing manager because I patched nautilus to draw background in that case. But if I am not wrong zesty does not have 3.24 version of nautilus... "However, when turning compositing on or off, the proper root window background can be seen for a split second." This most likely is problem with ubuntu patches, because upstream nautilus for long time draws / use transparent desktop window and metacity does use background set on root window. Some further information: The background is *not* the X root window; xwininfo says its called "Desktop". Modifying the X root window with xsetroot doesn't change anything. In zesty (metacity 1:3.24.0-2ubuntu1) the situation has become even worse: It will not show a wallpaper if compositing is disabled, ever.
