The behaviour is the same even in safe mode. One more thing I noticed is that if firefox doesn't have a previously downloaded location in it's memory, then the filename is retained. By default the Save Link As download location is ~/ Download any file by using 'save link as' into ~/Pictures (change directory from ~/ to ~/Pictures) -- file name is retained. Now the Save Link As download location has been changed to ~/Pictures for any new files. Now try again. I could not reproduce this. Maybe its triggered by an extension.
