Nish : This machine runs exclusively Ubuntu 16,04 LTS , I have another one with ubuntu ( a former version of 13,04, which doesn't update any more ) and Windows 7 Home premium . Please remember I am *not* a bit carver . If you want me to do some rather simple actions you may rely on it . I am not sure what someone told you when you bought your computer has to do with this bug. You chose to install samba, presumably because there are windows machines in your local network. If not, you don't need samba. With reference to your demand : Are you able to provide the output (unellipsized) from either of those commands? Thanks, Nish I do not think to be able to do so , is there any simple way to get these information ? When I bought this computer I was told ubuntu was the best ( and safest ) way to be safe and easily updated , including new versions of ubuntu - which doesn't seem to be the case by now. Job for smbd.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status smbd.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details. It would also appear dpkg has been reporting errors for some time and being ignored? (based upon DpkgHistoryLog.txt). Are you able to provide the output (unellipsized) from either of those commands?
