If this only happens on Windows 2003, I don't see it getting fixed given that it's an end of life product. I have no issues with rdesktop to Windows 2008 upwards with rdesktop 1.8.3. I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04 with rdesktop 1.8.3-2build1 and it does the same thing. After downloading the newest version of rdesktop from https://github.com/rdesktop/rdesktop and recompiling it works fine.
