About exporting gradients to EMF files, it does not seem to be implemented in Inkscape. According to Microsoft specifications, it is possible to use gradient with both EMF and EMF+. Thought some of my observations might be useful to this discussion. I have been using Inkscape and also rsvg-convert in an attempt to convert a few thousand SVGs to PDF. When I open certain PDFs in Illustrator I get this message: An unknown shading type was encountered and the offending shapes are un-editable images with a clipping mask over them. There are two circumstances that result in problems for me. 1) A gradient with only 2 stops. In the following example I have duplicated the offset=0 stop which fixes things and means that if I convert the SVG to PDF the resulting shape is filled with this gradient and works fine. Without the duplicate declaration, the gradient is converted to an un-editable image with a clipping mask. Code: Select all linearGradient id=ian_symbols_b8a58aafc1f12e74492e9e865b7f569b gradientUnits=userSpaceOnUse x1=113.7275 y1=136.9414 x2=197.0259 y2=136.9414 stop offset=0 style=stop-color:#927A62 id=stop1472 / stop offset=0 style=stop-color:#927A62 id=stop1472_dup / stop offset=1 style=stop-color:#93866F id=stop1474 / /linearGradient 2) A shape that has an opacity that is less than 1. I don't know how to fix this one and still maintain the look of the original. I understand that there are some issues with transparency and the PDF format, but obviously the full AI version of the PDF format these days supports transparency. So, could inkscape/rsvg-convert/cairo handle these conversions better, or is there something I can do with the original SVG code to make the opacity work ok in the final PDF? I wonder whether this bug has been fixed completely. I use Inkscape 0.47 on Ubuntu 9.10, and I still have problems exporting patterns and gradients to PDF in Inkscape (and using rsvg-convert). In particular, I have a problem when I use the pattern or gradient in the stroke attribute, not in the fill attribute. I used cairo-trace while converting Dart.svg to pdf and can confirm the huge number of stops is caused by cairo. It is the reflect that is causing it. I need to find a more optimal way to make cairo repeat/reflect gradients. I highly recommend using the cairo-trace tool when debugging cairo export problems. For example: cairo-trace inkscape -A Dart.pdf Dart.svg then open the inkscape.n.trace file to see all the calls to cairo. I've reported the AR freezing problem to Adobe. Looking at the PDF file there are 2535 gradient stops while the SVG only has about 30 stops. both spreadMethods 'reflect' and 'repeat' (in Inkscape 'Repeat: reflect' and 'Repeat: direct') produce an increased number of stops and overall greater distance between start and end stop on export to PDF. Only spreadMethod 'pad' (in Inkscape 'Repeat: none') keeps the the same number of stops on export to PDF and is correctly rendered after re- import to Inkscape. The gradient in each exported PDF is visually rendered the same way as in Inkscape (PDF Viewer: Apple Preview). @Khorf - it looks like gradients with 'repeat' settings other than 'none' are exported in a way that lets Adobe Reader crash. That's a bug in AR (even if the PDF is bad it shouldn't crash) that Adrian has reported to Adobe. You could confirm that it is limited to 'reflect' or 'direct' by recreating the dart gradient without 'Repeat: reflect' but with several stops that simulate the 'reflect' effect and testing if AR still crashes when opening the new PDF (or by trying to open the three PDFs included in my previous attachment with AR). Other than that I'm not expert enough to determine what causes the issue - I don't know the PDF file format (how it defines reflected or repeated linear gradients) and I trust Adrian if he says it looks like a bug in Inkscape. [ side note: I'm unsure whether this is a new issue and should better be filed separately or if it warrants to re-open this report (which was from the beginning a mixed bag of pattern and gradient issues?). Personally I would have filed a new one I guess, because it looks like it's limited to the export of two types of linear gradients, independent of transparency issues or other known difficulties with PDF export. Of course this is an assumption I can't verify without having Adobe software installed - but if AR would crash on every PDF with gradients created by Inkscape, I'd assume the bug tracker would be 'flooded' with duplicate reports? Not reproduced with Inkscape 0.46+devel r22540 on OS X 10.5.8 (cairo 1.8.8)
OS X native PDF viewer has no problems with the exported PDF file.
You could try and cleanup the defs section first ('File Vaccum
Defs') and remove all empty (flow) text elements (look at the SVG file
with Firefox: all black boxes are empty flowText boxes) in the XML
Editor. Save SVG and then as PDF again.
I'm attaching the PDF file of the cleaned-up version, could you test if
it still crashes Adobe Reader?

I don't have any Adobe software installed to test the file. Besides Apple's 'Preview.app' I have tested '168610-Dart-LeWitt-3.pdf ' with gs (Ghostscript 8.70) and gv (3.6.7): both load and display the file without any error messages or rendering bugs. Just stumbled upon this bug. I would only add that my first try was to print the document with pattern. Unfortunately only background color of the document was printed (red background with vhite stripes 1:1). After several tries to get my drawing somehow to output, I did it by exporting page to PNG format. PDF exort did the same, also printing to PDF using external PDF printer (PDF creator) Printing patterns does not work for me. Using Inkscape 0,46 on windows. The pattern bug seems to be fixed in the last Inkscape dev builds (tried with 21203, Ubuntu, and a slightly older one on Windows XP). The PDF shows the stripes as expected. I don't know if it's fixed in cairo or inkscape, but I suggest we consider (at least) the inkscape report as fix committed. Fell free to change it back to another status if you still have these issues with the dev builds. Jean-Denis, could you please reply directly from the launchpad form. I too am running into problems saving as PDF files with gradients. I spent two evenings tracking to problem to gradients (a basic feature of Inkscape, no?). I am only using PDF because other bugs prevent direct printing of my SVG file. Now I can't print via PDF either. That led me to find this bug report. Many hours and hours wasted, so please consider this a high priority bug. I should be clearer. When I save my file (reduced to a simple design) to a PDF file, if it has a gradient, and I open it in Acrobat Reader, then Reader HANGS. As of the Inkscape in svn both patterns and gradients seem to be exported correctly to PDF. However, please note that you may need to use acroread to view the PDFs, since other PDF viewers may not be capable of viewing these files.
