I'm in the middle of an upgrade of ubuntu-studio from 16.10 to 17.04. Upgrade stopped at "systemctl stop mysql.service". Thanks for filing the report with us. Do you have any logs or messages from when you first attempted to upgrade mysql that indicated why the upgrade fail? You have done some great work on trying to get around it, but I would like to understand what caused the original upgrade to fail. We have a number of reports where an upgrade will fail because the service is not quite up yet, you can see LP: #1592669 for more information there.
