The user config should work fine, once set to jpg - for the depth of the problem just follow the debian bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=893809 - that will lead you to the relevant upstream things. To make it short: 1.97 will not be fixed unless someone stand up and spend time on dead code. The upcoming screengrab release will fix the most of the long standing issues, but not all - it is still work in progress.
