Yes, I think that would get you to the point of finding out if this
workaround lets you continue or not.

Thanks

Thanks Seth,

So I went to the grub file in the /etc/default folder, should I just add
'forcepae' (does it need to be in caps?) to any empty line in the grub
file? and then I will run the command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc

Is this all I have to do to fix the issue?

[Bug 1742818] Re: package linux-image-4.13.0-17-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2018-01-11 Thread Seth Arnold
The error message is:

This kernel does not support a non-PAE CPU.

This page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE suggests that you might
have luck using the 'forcepae' kernel command line flag in your
/etc/default/grub and rebuilding the grub menu. (I believe sudo dpkg-
reconfigure grub-pc is the easiest way to do this but there may be
better ways.) Your CPU doesn't advertise PAE but *might* support it.

If your processor truly does not support PAE you may not be able to use
Ubuntu's kernel packages.

I have not heard of any mitigations for Meltdown or Spectre for i686
processors.

Thanks
