[Bug 1747889] Re: (Acer Aspire V3-372) System not booting after update
I've recently encountered this on an HP ProBook 6470b. This system doesn't seem to be able to "remember" its BootOrder variable; typing "sudo efibootmgr" returns results similar to this: BootCurrent: Timeout: 0 seconds No BootOrder is set; firmware will attempt recovery Boot* ubuntu Boot0001* ubuntu Boot0002* ubuntu Boot0003* ubuntu Boot0004* ubuntu Boot0005* ubuntu Boot0006* ubuntu It appears that every time the system reboots, fbx64.efi adds a new "ubuntu" entry; but because the system is amnesiac about BootOrder, those entries are never added. (Note that the "no BootOrder is set; firmware will attempt recovery" message appears after every reboot and even after a power off and reboot. It's running the latest firmware, which is rather elderly [2012].) Rather than reboot, it would be better if fbx64.efi would launch the boot entry that it adds. It would also be good if fbx64.efi could check for existing entries that match what it wants rather than blindly add a new one; as it is, on a system like my HP, sooner or later the NVRAM will fill up if the user walks away while the system is in its reboot loop, and of course this will cause additional problems, possibly including a "Samsung brick" type of scenario. I don't know if this HP has a buggy firmware or failing NVRAM. (I bought it used and so I don't know how it worked when new.) I've seen EFI flakiness on other systems as they age; one four-year-old laptop I own can't accept ANY NVRAM changes, for instance. Both this HP ProBook and that other four-year-old laptop are perfectly functional otherwise. Having a way to work around such minor hardware failures as systems age is desirable. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1747889 Title: (Acer Aspire V3-372) System not booting after update To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shim-signed/+bug/1747889/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1747889] Re: (Acer Aspire V3-372) System not booting after update
Mortiz, I think it will be sufficient to get the infromation from the current setup then; we mostly need to see 'sudo efibootmgr -v', and which versions of things are installed. Running 'ubuntu-bug shim' should do that automatically.
Thanks a lot @mb-o. Extremely sorry I couldn't try the steps before. I have to use work laptop to finish of something. I will recover the system with the steps you mentioned. Also I will get the screens and BIOS settings before I do anything for @cyphermox. [Bug 1747889] Re: (Acer Aspire V3-372) System not booting after update
@cyphermox: Just to clarify: Do I need to install the faulty upgrade again and then file the bug report from a live system? [Bug 1747889] Re: (Acer Aspire V3-372) System not booting after update
Ok, I'll file a different bug report, then. Already have a live USB which I used for the recovery process. [Bug 1747889] Re: (Acer Aspire V3-372) System not booting after update
That's great, those are the screens I was interested in. Looks like this may actually be a different bug. Could you please go ahead and file a separate bug report for your system (use 'ubuntu-bug shim')? Is this an install of 16.04 like I think it is, and if so, is there any way you could boot to an Ubuntu session (such as using a live CD / USB) and get the output of 'sudo efibootmgr -v' to include on the bug?

I think we first need to have a better idea what the setup for these Thinkpads is, since I routinely do test specifically Thinkpads multiple times are part of the shim update process, both before signing by Microsoft and after, before uploading. Could you describe the setup in the system's firmware (BIOS), or take a screenshot of the screens? We should know what the setup is for booting, if CSM is enabled, etc. ** Changed in: shim-signed (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1747889 Title: (Acer Aspire V3-372) System not booting after update To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shim-signed/+bug/1747889/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1747889] Re: (Acer Aspire V3-372) System not booting after update
@yogeshpathade: See my first post. You'll have to boot into a live system, mount the root filesystem, chroot into it and replace the versions of shim-signed and grub with the original versions. To do so, purge the installed versions, look up the original versions of those packages via "apt-cache policy [package]" and then install those via "apt install [package]=[version]". Boot-repair will not work since it will try to install the latest versions, which don't work on our hardware. @vorlon: Since this bug seems to affect multiple Thinkpad models, the title and the priority of this bug should probably be changed.
I have got this as well with latest update on Ubuntu 17.10 last week. I am running X1 Carbon Gen 5 really well until last week things got bad after running the software update. The system keeps on rebooting with System BootOrder not found. Initializing defaults. Reset system I have tried the boot-repair but didnt help. Tried to set the boot order and boot in bios with no help. Reinstalled the root but seems to be not helping in any way. [Bug 1747889] Re: (Acer Aspire V3-372) System not booting after update
Some additional information: On my system, a similar message is visible for half a second every single time I boot. When I was stuck in the boot loop, I saw another line that said "Reset system". I'm not 100% sure I'm experiencing the exact same issue, but the very same update also caused a permanent boot loop on my laptop.
