Hi, this is a bit of a special case, let me try to add some info. The DKMS module fails - yes, but that module isn't needed at all anymore. This DKMS provided - vmhgfs which is replaced with fuse - and all other modules are part of the kernel - the only module left being installed by it is the vmxnet driver, which is deprecated in favor of the in kernel "vmxnet3" module Due to the above it was first dropped from recommends in 2:10.1.5-5055683-4 (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=860857) requested by VMWare. And later on completely dropped as it really isn't needed at all. In your particular case there would be the backport of 10.2 "2:10.2.0-3~ubuntu0.16.04.1" which is recommended for plenty of new fixes/features in particular to work with new VMWare versions. And among many other changes this will drop the dkms package and therefore resolve the issue building it against the newer kernel.
