[Bug 1791806] Re: alsa does not detech headphone output on Clevo P651RS laptop

2018-11-14 Thread Felipe Ortega
Hello Lehel,

Indeed, you are right. My output is different from yours, and I get what
you indicate in your previous message. However, the result is quite
similar because my headphones jack does not work at all (no plug in
detection, no sound) and the model came from the same original
manufacturer (Clevo).

Today, I applied another update to the kernel (where I think is the main
problem) and the ubuntu-drivers package (probably related, but not very
likely). After reboot, the headphones worked again. Then, I decided to
suspend and resume to check if the headphones still worked. This time, I
did not tested the simultaneous connection headphones + ext. mic. No
luck, though. The headphones stopped working again.

I am not sure if the root cause is the same for your bug and mine, but I
am pretty sure at this point that there is a problem with the
snd_hda_codec driver at kernel level. So far, the repeating cycle is:

- I apply a new kernel update, then reboot.
- After first reboot, I have again sound through the headphones connection.
Quality is really superb, much better than line out (not sure if due to lower
impedance of headphones jack or because the driver was improved).
- If I suspend and resume, the headphones connection stops working again.
- After next reboots, the headphones do not work at all anymore.

My guess is that we can only patiently wait for some kernel developer to
take a look at this at some point, and deliver a solution upstream, that
can be then transferred to Ubuntu users.

For now, I will have to settle for using the line out to listen to
spotify in the library while working.

Best regards,
Felipe.

2018-10-28 Thread Lehel Gyuro
Hi Felipe

The symptoms you report are different from the one reported by me. Your are
able to use the headphone output, while in my case the headphone output is not
detected at all by the driver.
Could you please look up the alsa initialization section in your dmesg?
As stated before the issue reported in this bug is generating the following
output:

snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0:hp_outs=0 (0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)

In your case my guess is, you will see:

snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0:hp_outs=0 (0x1b/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)

[Bug 1791806] Re: alsa does not detech headphone output on Clevo P651RS laptop

2018-10-28 Thread Felipe Ortega
This week I got updates for several packages apparently related with
sound management, as well as a new kernel. After update and reboot, the
headphones jack started to work again. Connection/disconnection was
correctly managed in PulseAudio, and audio quality was very good.

However, like in the previous cases, as soon as I plugged in both the
headphones jack and the mic jack I got a peak of noise in my headset,
and everything stopped working again. Even connecting the headphones
only

Thus, maybe the key is some problem with *both the mic and headphones
jacks* connected at the same time.

Finally, my laptop support service provided this fix for turning off the
S/PDIF red light in the headphones connection:

mkdir -p ~/.config/autostart
tee -a ~/.config/autostart/disable_optical_led.desktop
Then, reboot.

Nevertheless, I have not tested this yet, just in case that for some
reason it may disconnect the complete headphones jack, preventing me to
test any solution for this problem.

S/PDIF is on, like in the case of Felipe, but headphones never worked.

Played around with hdajackretask and hdajacksensetest, found the output
on pin 0x1b, jack insertion and removal is detected properly.
Unfortunately no audio output can be routed to the re-configured pin,
the only "sound" was/is a static bang consisting of a single peak
whenever it is switched on/off, and some static noise like a badly
isolated sound card from the 2000's picking up noises from a HDD cable
running close by.

[Bug 1791806] Re: alsa does not detech headphone output on Clevo P651RS laptop

2018-10-04 Thread Felipe Ortega
Update: as per request from my laptop vendor, I updated the BIOS
firmware of my computer(Clevo P650HP), then reinstalled Ubuntu 18.04.1.

After this process I was able to trace the source (or one of them) of
this bug:

- Right after the fresh install, the headphones jack and line-out jack
work fine (both).

- When I attempt to connect a gaming headset with headphones + mic
connectors, that is, when I plug in the headphones and the mic jacks
simultaneously, the headphones jack stops working.

- From that point on, I cannot recover the auto-detection of headphones
connection when I plug in the jack in the connector. PulseAudio does not
switch to headphones out, it remainst at speakers. Alsamixer does not
mute all other channels except for the headphones.

Hope this helps.

Additonal comment:

S/PDIF out is *always connected*, so there is a red light coming out of
the combo headphones + S/PDIF jack (it is a 2 in 1 combo connection
according to the user manual of the laptop).

If I remember correctly, the patch that solved this issue in Ubuntu
16.04 turned the S/PDIF out off, as I could not see any red light coming
out after applying the fix.

PulseAudio controls in GNOME show both outs are active.

[Bug 1791806] Re: alsa does not detech headphone output on Clevo P651RS laptop

2018-09-26 Thread Felipe Ortega
Here is another user affected by the same issue. Running Ubuntu 18.04.1,
kernel 4.15.0-34-generic.

In Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, I was also experiencing similar problems: optical
output in headphones jack was always on (could see the red light), no
headphones sound after suspending to RAM, and not recognizing plug-in
action of jack, only manually using alsamixer.

I managed to overcome the problem installing this fix package:

https://github.com/Unrud/init-headphone

However, it only works for Xenial (16.04). I tried again this approach
with Ubuntu 18.04.1 without success.

In case it helps, it seems that this laptop has the SoundBlaster X-Fi 5
chipset installed.

Finally, you can manually turn on the headphones output in alsamixer,
and mute the rest of the outputs to get it work again. But it is a
nuisance. I suspect the problem might be in Pulse Audio Volume Control
or somewhere in between alsamixer and PAVC. If alsamixer can see and
activate the audio jack it is probably not a hardware or kernel problem.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.19 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.
