I was able to suppress these fatal crashes in plymouth that launched the bug reporter on that package under current 18.10 Cosmic by building and installing the 0.9.3-1ubuntu12 release on launchpad https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plymouth from the disco dingo proposed updates.
