[Bug 1875012] Re: UC20 running in OVMF triggers qemu emulation error (cloudimage works fine on the same)
I've setup a UEFI core18 VM and dialed the memory all the way down to 256M but the loop mounting and loading of the kernel still works fine. Then I've copied grubx64.efi from the core18 image to the core20 image and now QEMU no longer crashes. So it looks like a change in grub between 2.02 and 2.04 in combination with UEFI and 'low' memory is causing this issue. ** Also affects: grub (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1875012 Title: UC20 running in OVMF triggers qemu emulation error (cloudimage works fine on the same) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/1875012/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1875012] Re: UC20 running in OVMF triggers qemu emulation error (cloudimage works fine on the same)
Right now we don't know yet if it unpacks and then execute garbage OR fails even earlier. We discussed this on IRC if grub might be placing it at a wrong offset making it need more memory, or some padding, or at unsquashing already ... We ended for now with: [09:55] cpaelzer, will dig into some more and let you know/update the ticket. [09:56] cpaelzer, maybe it's the unsquashing that kills it already Thanks in advance @Juergh for that! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1875012 Title: UC20 running in OVMF triggers qemu emulation error (cloudimage works fine on the same) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qemu/+bug/1875012/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1875012] Re: UC20 running in OVMF triggers qemu emulation error (cloudimage works fine on the same)
I can confirm that with 2G the guest seems to start up now. I agree that this should be more graceful, but it has to be triggered by the guest. So might the error path in the guest run into a dead-end if unable to load the kernel that then is like a illegal instruction to the host or something like that?
[Bug 1875012] Re: UC20 running in OVMF triggers qemu emulation error (cloudimage works fine on the same)
Hrm. The core20 kernel snap is bigger than the core18 snap and increasing the VM memory to 2G seems to 'fix' this. I guess the question is is there a way to handle this more gracefully than killing QEMU?
[Bug 1875012] Re: UC20 running in OVMF triggers qemu emulation error (cloudimage works fine on the same)
Ok it seems the kernel snap is causing this. Core20 grub can loopmount pc-kernel_455.snap (from a core18 image) just fine but kills QEMU when loopmounting pc-kernel_461.snap (the original core20 snap).

[Bug 1875012] Re: UC20 running in OVMF triggers qemu emulation error (cloudimage works fine on the same)
The first thing that grub does when booting is: loopback /snaps/pc-kernel_461.snap which kills QEMU. In core20 that snap is on an 'EFI System' partition (vfat) whereas in core18 it's on a regular Linux (ext4) partition.
[Bug 1875012] Re: UC20 running in OVMF triggers qemu emulation error (cloudimage works fine on the same)
Can someone help to dissect the UC20 image and what it does differently here? The cloud-image boots with the same OVMF/Uefi based config, but UC20 runs into a crash. Understanding what the UC20 boot does differently and any chance to build that piece by piece (e.g. be able to skip some steps until we find the trigger) would be awesome. I subscribed MVO to help, but feel free to pull in others as you see fit. Until we got any further on this side I'm unsure what to do about Ubuntu unless you already know much more to help getting this forward. For now this is a bit like "I throw in this blob and it crashes", so helping to un-blobify seems to be the next step to me.
